Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are an exciting new regenerative skin treatment for the face, neck and body. This unique technology can address multiple concerns, such as dull & coarse skin, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, under eye dark circles, acne scarring, stretch marks, as well as surgical scarring. DNA and RNA are 2 examples of polynucleotides.
The polynucleotides which are used in aesthetic medicine to regenerate and improve the skin quality are made of highly purified fragments of DNA extracted from wild salmon or trout sperm. The trout used are the same as used for food and salmon and trout DNA closely resembles human DNA. Polynucleotides are highly purified and then sterilised from a licensed source, the production and manufacture process is highly regulated and the manufacturing meets CE safety standards. All of the protein molecules are extracted, which dramatically reduces the potential risk of allergy. This is a treatment which has been extensively used in medicine for many years with a considerable number of published studies to support the safety and clinical benefits in terms of regenerative benefits. Polynucleotides are able to stimulate specific receptors on cells to positively influence many cellular regenerative processes within the skin.
These include; the repair and regenerative actions of fibroblast cells, the renewal of collagen & elastin, increased production of hyaluronic acid, improvement of health new micro-blood vessels, anti-inflammatory benefits, regulating the activity of melanocyte cells which produce pigmentation. The polynucleotides are distilled into a range of strengths (depending on the area/concern to be treated), and suspended in water for injection. They are placed by injection into the superficial layer in the skin, which can be delivered either by an extremely fine needle, or by cannula to administer micro-doses to the intended area. An initial treatment course of 3-5 sessions is recommended to achieve optimum results. The results can be seen gradually over the full course of treatment & appointments should be scheduled 3-4 weeks apart. We would assess the full & final result 1 month after the final treatment.

Treatment time
Approximately 1 hour. This may depend on any combined treatments (such as Dermalux) being used in the same session, as well as the number of areas being treated.
Results
Gradual & progressive improvement in a number of concerns, such as improved luminosity, skin tone/texture and reduction in areas of hyperpigmentation, as well as overall improvements in localised scarring with reduced depth and a more even appearance. Results will vary between individuals as the outcomes are influenced by many factors, such as, age, the baseline condition of the skin as well as lifestyle choices, such as smoking, airborne pollutants and the overall quality of diet/hydration & alcohol intake.
Downtime
Bruising and mild swelling is common, so it is important to factor these temporary side-effects prior to any key events or social events. Bruising may last from 48 hours, potentially to 1 week or longer. Avoiding alcohol prior to, and following treatment is critically important to minimise the risk of swelling and bruising as much as possible. Small entry marks may be temporarily noticeable on the skin following treatment, which settle soon after the treatment is completed. There may be small papules visible on the skin for a short time following treatment, this is a normal expectation to see as the polynucleotides need to be placed superficially in the skin and disperse and settle rapidly after placement.

Frequently asked questions
Is treatment with polynucleotides painful?
It is normal to expect mild and temporary stinging in the skin during treatment, which resolves after the treatment is complete. It may be appropriate to use a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the skin, which is an option that can be discussed at the time of the consultation.
How many polynucleotide treatments do I need?
This can be determined after a bespoke assessment as part of a comprehensive consultation. It is generally recommended that an initial course of between 3-5 treatments is recommended, with an interval of between 2-3 weeks between treatments with results often visible for 6 months and beyond. This is dependent upon age, a commitment to maintenance treatments & lifestyle factors.
Are there any specific post-treatment instructions that I need to follow?
Yes, these are explained to you in detail during your initial consultation, as well as on the day of treatment. It is important to refrain from consuming alcohol on the day of treatment and for at least 24 hours afterwards. It is also advised to abstain from touching the treated area(s) for a minimum of 24 hours and to avoid using any exfoliating or active skincare ingredients on the treated area until the skin has fully recovered around the sites of injection, which is usually after 24 hours. It is also recommended to avoid vigorous exercise for 24-48 hours as this can potentially prolong, or worsen swelling, and side effects from treatment.
Can I maintain the results from the initial course of polynucleotides long-term?
Yes, absolutely! This is recommended for continued & cumulative improvement over time. A bespoke maintenance regimen will be suggested at the time of consultation.
