Laser Hair Removal

A. This is a common concern that many patients have before they begin their laser hair removal journey. More traditional laser hair removal methods may have been more uncomfortable, but the Motus AY offers a more comfortable solution. We are delivering focused bursts of laser to the hair in the treatment area. Hair follicles which are in their growth stage absorb this energy as heat, which moves down the pigment into the follicle, which is the target. As a result, the heat damages the follicle and reduces the hair’s ability to grow back. Traditionally, laser hair removal feels like the snap of an elastic band against the skin. The Motus AY uses a sapphire cooling tip to soothe the surface of the skin during treatment to help protect against any uncomfortable sensations, burns, and pigmentation changes. The system uses different wavelengths to gradually heat up the skin to a temperature that damages the hair follicles to reduce and eliminate hair regrowth without harming the surrounding tissue. Cooling the skin provides great benefit, which is provided as part of treatment. Does laser hair removal hurt?

A. This will be discussed at your personalised consultation following a detailed assessment of the area(s) to be treated. We often recommend a minimum of 6 sessions to achieve long-lasting hair reduction and effective results. Your body hair goes through a resting and growth cycle, which means that the treatment is only effective on hairs that are in their growth phase. In light of this, it is always recommended to give a course of treatment to ensure that the hairs can be treated in all growth phases, to achieve the best possible results.

A. Prior to the area being treated, it should be free from make-up, perfume, deodorant and body/face creams. This includes avoiding using deodorant to underarms prior to treatment, if this is the area to be treated. It is important to avoid waxing, plucking, hair removal creams and bleaching for 1 month prior to hair removal treatments. Hair should be shaved before the appointment and be no longer than 1mm in length, and there must be no active or fake tan on any areas requiring treatment. The use of sunbeds or prolonged exposure to sunlight is not permitted 1 month prior to treatment. A minimum factor of SPF 30 should be applied to the area between treatments. An active tan must have completely faded before treatment can start, and fake tan must be completely removed prior to treatment. It is vitally important that you inform us of all medication (including over the counter) remedies/supplements that you may be taking at the consultation, as well as any changes with regard to these between appointments during the treatment course.

A. Cooling the skin may be required prior to, during and following the procedure. If the feeling of heat persists following treatment upon returning home, then a cooling can continue. Specific advice will be given at the time of your appointment, should this be required, but it is important to avoid applying cool packs, or ice, directly in contact with the skin. After treatment, the area is likely to appear red and raised with some tingling, which is perfectly normal and will settle. Swelling and bruising may also occur, this can vary depending upon the area and specific treatment being performed. Specific post-treatment advice will be tailored to you individually.
